MISTRAS performs non-destructive eddy current (ET) inspection on condenser, evaporator, chiller, and heat exchanger tubes to identify defects, wall thinning, pitting, and corrosion before tubes fail. Using Hocking Electronics and Olympus-Nortec equipment, our ASNT-TC-1A Level II and Level III certified analysts evaluate 1,200 to 1,600 tubes per day on-site, providing rapid, actionable data on tube condition without taking equipment out of service. Eddy current results directly inform retubing decisions, identifying which tubes genuinely need replacement and which remain serviceable, helping reduce unnecessary replacement costs and extend equipment life.
MISTRAS provides complete retubing services for chillers, condensers, evaporators, absorbers, heat exchangers, and steam surface condensers. Where older units were built with prime surface or 19 FPI copper tubing, retubing can be used to upgrade to higher-efficiency internally and externally enhanced tubes with 25–50% more surface area, improving heat transfer performance while meeting or exceeding original design specifications.
All replacement tubes meet commercial ASME B359 and Navy Mil-T specifications. MISTRAS carries an extensive inventory of tubes in a range of alloys and can furnish custom configurations to order, with short delivery turnaround compared to standard mill lead times.
MISTRAS uses GE Acu-View remote video inspection cameras for internal tube and component photography, providing visual documentation of tube condition, deposits, corrosion, and physical damage without requiring disassembly. Video inspection records support maintenance planning and asset condition reporting.
MISTRAS provides mechanical and chemical tube cleaning services to remove scale, mineral deposits, biofouling, and debris that reduce heat transfer efficiency and accelerate tube degradation. Tube brushing is performed utilizing Goodway Tube Cleaners, and chemical cleaning is performed using Rydlyme®, a biodegradable descaling agent effective on calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, and other common mineral deposits. Following cleaning, eddy current testing can be performed to assess the underlying tube condition.
MISTRAS is a specialized Belzona® coating applicator. Using portable vacublasters, our technicians remove rust, scale, and debris from condensers, evaporators, tube sheets, water boxes, and heads, then apply multiple coats of 100% solid epoxy resin to protect against corrosion, erosion, and chemical attack. The same process is available for cooling tower basins, where epoxy coating improves flow performance and extends service intervals.
MISTRAS holds ASME “U” and “R” stamp certifications and NBIC repair certification, and is inspected by Hartford Steam Boiler. Our welding and fabrication capabilities support code-compliant repairs to pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and associated components, including weld repair of tube sheets, heads, and shells.
