Assets in agriculture, food, pharmaceutical, and other process facilities often operate with hazardous chemicals in high-pressure, high-temperature environments. MISTRAS provides inspection and engineering solutions to ensure process safety.

Food Processing Inspection & Engineering Services

With processed foods serving as such a large part of the world’s diet, food-processing facilities must adhere to strict standards.

Heat exchangers, vessels, storage tanks, and piping in food-processing facilities must undergo regular inspections to ensure that equipment is operating correctly and without potentially contaminating food products.

MISTRAS performs multiple non-destructive testing (NDT) inspection techniques for our clients in the food processing industry, including:

  • Ultrasonic (UT)
  • Phased Array (PAUT)
  • Eddy Current (EC)
  • Visual Inspection (VT)
  • Acoustic Emission (AE)

We supply these inspection services as part of individual asset inspections, integrated asset integrity programs, and in support of food processing facility outages.

Pharmaceutical Facility Inspection & Engineering Services

MISTRAS’ solutions for the pharmaceutical industry include NDT inspections, vibration testing, asset-condition monitoring, risk-based inspection (RBI) assessments, and engineering standard reviews.

Our engineering experts have helped to review and improve global engineering standards for international pharmaceutical companies. We do this through cold eye reviews of incineration systems, bulk storage of liquefied compressed gases, distillation & solvent recovery systems, and more.

We’ve also successfully perform engineering audits of reliability, maintenance, and RBI standards, and offered recommendations to improve system reliability.

Pharmaceutical Predictive Maintenance (PdM) and Vibration Testing & Monitoring

Because so many assets in pharmaceutical facilities utilize rolling bearings and belt drives, MISTRAS offers expert predictive maintenance (PdM) programs and vibration analysis to detective failures before they occur.

MISTRAS has also supplied our pharmaceutical clients with online monitoring systems with AE and vibration data monitoring capabilities. These systems have been used during drug trials to validate sound and vibration disturbances that might affect trial results.

Other vibration and PdM solutions for pharmaceutical assets include:

  • Motor Testing
  • Infrared Thermography
  • Oil Analysis

Farming & Agriculture Facility Inspection and Engineering Services

Farm equipment often operates in corrosion-inducing conditions. It is often located or stored outside with no protection from the weather and precipitation, and sometimes only gets used for a few months out of the year, enabling rust to worsen over time and increasing the chance for mechanical malfunctions.

MISTRAS offers inspection and engineering consulting solutions to ensure agriculture assets are operating as efficiently and safely as they should be, including:

  • Piping
  • Pressure Vessels
  • Storage Tanks
  • Crusher Shafts
Anhydrous Ammonia Storage Procedure Consulting

Anhydrous ammonia (NH3) is a commonly-used fertilizer, but its dangerous chemical composition and the high-pressure tanks in which it must be stored can lead to significant safety hazards if not properly designed, inspected, and maintained.

In addition to being required to adhere to strict regulatory guidelines regarding anhydrous ammonia storage, facility operators can substantially enhance personnel and facility safety by implementing MISTRAS’ Risk Management Plans (RMP).

MISTRAS’ engineering experts specialize in developing and implementing RMP programs, customized to each individual facility’s processes and equipment. In the case of a regulatory body audit, MISTRAS’ industry experts and certified inspectors offer consultative services to assist in navigating the regulations.

MISTRAS’ comprehensive inspection and consulting RMP program incorporates solutions for:

MISTRAS also utilizes Recommended and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP) to manage risk in process technologies and operations. RAGAGEP is a crucial aspect of RMP-compliance, governing the documentation, testing, inspection, and inspection frequency of all process equipment.
