Bridges & Tunnels
MISTRAS partners with downstream refining and petrochemical operators to deliver inspection, integrity, and data solutions that support safer, more reliable operations. From optimizing turnaround execution to early detection of degradation mechanisms, we help refineries manage risk, maintain compliance, and minimize unplanned outages. Our integrated inspection and engineering approach provides actionable insights that support operational decision-making and enhance unit availability across critical process equipment and infrastructure.

MISTRAS conducted acoustic emission (AE) inspections on the Bay Bridge to inspect for concrete-cracking related to stress before a major bridge construction project.
Structural integrity and performance for bridge and tunnel infrastructure
Bridge and tunnel structures are subject to continuous traffic loading, vibration, and environmental exposure that can accelerate mechanical wear, fatigue, and cracking. Early identification of these conditions allows owners to understand where degradation is occurring and how it may affect structural performance over time. Inspection and monitoring focus on detecting internal and surface defects before they progress into more serious structural concerns.
Continuous monitoring provides visibility into how bridge and tunnel structures respond to load, movement, and environmental conditions during operation. By tracking changes in structural behavior, monitoring systems help identify abnormal responses or deterioration trends that could impact safety or serviceability if left unaddressed.
Bridges and tunnels often include confined, elevated, or otherwise difficult-to-reach areas that are challenging to inspect using conventional access methods. Specialized access techniques enable safe and efficient inspection of decks, soffits, cables, piers, tunnel linings, and other critical components while minimizing disruption to traffic and surrounding infrastructure.
Independent inspection and verification help confirm that bridge and tunnel construction, rehabilitation, and repair activities meet design specifications, codes, and quality requirements. Third-party oversight supports consistency, accountability, and confidence in the integrity of completed work.
Identifying defects early during construction or rehabilitation reduces the likelihood that issues remain hidden until later stages, when corrective action becomes more disruptive. Inspection and testing help uncover workmanship or material issues so they can be addressed promptly and effectively.
