AE Training

MISTRAS Group, Inc. Learn Centers provide training and course exams to assure successful transfer of knowledge and skills. Individual certifications are employer provided if SNT-TC-1A based or third party central certification provided if ISO-9712/EN473 based certifications are desired.

MISTRAS Services can provide Outside agency NDT Level III services if desired to assist customers to develop their own in-house certification program. Please see the MISTRAS Services list for a laboratory nearest you.

ACOUSTIC EMISSION TRANSFORMER CONDITION ASSESSMENT LEVEL I

Duration: 40 hours
Cost: $1400

This AE training course is on non-destructive testing of Power Transformers using Acoustic Emission. This is a Level I course, designed for those who are new to acoustic emission or new to power transformers, or need to extend their SNT-TC-1A formatted qualifications towards employer certification as required by the standards. Level I Specific (written) and Practical examinations will be given, developed in accordance with SNT-TC-1A.
  • Day 1, 8:00am to 5:00pm
    • Transformer basic operating principles
    • Construction
    • Accessories
    • Degradation processes


  • Day 2, 8:00am to 5:00pm
    • Oil quality tests
    • Gas chromatography theory
    • Hands-on session # 1 (DGA)
    • Acoustic emission basic theory


  • Day 3, 8:00am to 5:00pm
    • Acoustic emission applied to power transformers
    • Safety considerations
    • Installation, test procedures, and standards
    • EPRI R&D project
    • Case studies
    • Software operation for data collection


  • Day 4, 8:00am to 5:00pm
    • Hands-on session # 2: Trip to substation to Perform an AE test on one power transformer
    • Safety orientation On-site
    • Installation of AE instrumentation
    • Beginning of AE test
    • Classroom discussion of hands-on session #2


  • Day 5, 8:00am to 5:00pm
    • Continuation of hands on session # 2
    • Data review
    • Removal of equipment from transformer
    • Hands-on session #3
    • Data analysis / evaluation
    • Report preparation overview
    • Class work review and close
    • Level I Specific (written) Examination

Includes course notebook, classroom and hands-on instruction, documentation of results, lunches, one specific exam. 1) Trainee can select if they want to attend all days of just on the days of interest (call for prices). 2) This course can be offered at your location in English or Spanish.
