Corrosion and its damaging effects are a nearly-universal problem in the industrial world. As a global leader in asset protection, MISTRAS offers a variety of mechanical solutions to prevent and mitigate corrosion as much as possible.
Tanks, piping, pipelines and other equipment that are exposed to rain, temperature changes, and other harsh environmental conditions are at high risk of corrosion damage. After detecting these damages through non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections, MISTRAS offers blasting and coating maintenance services for assets in the oil & gas, petrochemical, alternative energy, mining, and commercial construction industries.
MISTRAS provides solutions for multiple stages of corrosion mitigation and prevention. We’ll prepare surfaces and apply coatings and fireproofing to protect assets from corrosion forming. Over time, as those coatings wear, we’ll remove the coatings and clean assets using a variety of traditional and advanced blasting techniques, then re-apply coatings to get your equipment back into service.
Ultra-high-pressure water blasting uses water propelled at an extremely high speed and pressure against a surface to remove corrosion and other forms of build-up. MISTRAS uses proprietary UHP technology for this corrosion mitigation and surface preparation service.
Ultra High Pressure (UHP) Blasting is an effective corrosion mitigation tool when traditional methods of corrosion removal are not powerful enough. MISTRAS’ solutions are safe, practical, and cost-efficient means of surface preparation, requiring minimal equipment setup, no need for containment, and no hazardous airborne materials.
While traditional UHP can only expose surface profiles where they already exist, MISTRAS’ UHP blasting solutions can also open up new profiles on rust blooms. This makes the corrosion removal and coating application process more effective.
MISTRAS also provides a UHP robotic blasting and recovery system. Through its vacuum recovery system, all spent water and paint chips are recovered during the blasting process, freeing the air from contaminants, and leaving the substrate ready for the immediate application of protective coatings. It operates on vertical surfaces and upside-down, with production rates as high as 500ft2 per hour. With no need for containment, other personnel are able to work side-by-side with the robotic UHP system, further eliminating downtime and safety hazards.
Refinery equipment, or any assets that are exposed to precipitation and changes in weather, are at risk for corrosion, so MISTRAS performs surface preparation and coating services to protect your assets against these threats. MISTRAS also performs these services for aerospace & defense components to provide a layer of corrosion- and wear-resistance to protect against the intense conditions under which they operate.
Existing coatings also need to be maintained as they break down over time, so MISTRAS utilizes its wide range of blasting and cleaning services to remove damaged coatings, clean surfaces and prepare them for coating applications, and re-apply corrosive-resistant paints, all with a single team, including for at-height assets.
